Can a student grab the highest placement of his college in the CS branch even if he/she doesn't know any programming language or any other concepts related to computers at the time of joining (1st year)?-query17

If you want highest package ,you must have good programming / coding skills , because always there is great demand of Developer as compared to other profiles like testing, databases handler , Consultant , service associate , designer etc.

And it's normal in first year that most of students approx 90–95% don't know ABC of coding or programming , after that you learn everything from basics like C or C++ programming. This is your learning stage you have lots of time. But aim will be simple that you should have good coding skills at the end of your academics either you learn by theory or practicals in lab or by external sources like private training institutes ,it doesn't matters. Matter is that you should know programming in deep learning and practical on any languages like python ,java, R languages, C++, etc many languages are there . All will be in your portion mostly one in each sem but at the end you should know atleast two very confidently and 1 by core ,deep knowledge from a to z everything. There are other areas except programming you should know core knowledge and interest atleast in one with programming as I said above. That areas are artificial intelligence, IoT , cloud computing, Networking , database management , data handling, data structures , etc

Don't worry this all will be in your journey of engineering as one subject in any SEM of Engineering .

But ya you should go beyond academics as I said this will be just a subject(both programming languages and these area) which will come and go as a just a part of Semester exam. You have to go beyond academics if you want to do something different and achieve good placements. You have to be too much expert in any one programming language and any one area expertise at the end of your academics which you will mention in your resume and you will make it as your part of life ,most probably you also serve your life in it by getting job in company related to it. Ya one mor point you have final year project in final year , try to make your project in that selected area and programming language only. So you will definitely be in touch of that till completion of engineering /getting placements.

Also try to get certification in that from external sources by doing course and giving exam in it such as Nptel, online courses and certification, Learn for free or Online Courses - Learn Anything, On Your Schedule | Udemy or by Oracle certified courses, or by MCSA tc.

This is the developing phase of your life where you have to polish and sharp yourself in a way that in future you will rule in your own way.

Keep in mind

Diamond was earlier just a stone get sharp by hot molten magma(lava) for thousand of years to get shine for lifetime to turn its importance from just a stone to precious shining Diamond.
